About this indicator

FrequencyMensual
Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia.
What it isMeasures the level of output of Argentina's manufacturing industry, the sector that transforms raw materials into finished goods. Published by INDEC (the manufacturing IPI), it is one of the country's most closely watched cyclical activity indicators.
How it's calculatedExpressed as an index against a base year, it is built by aggregating the sub-indices of the various manufacturing branches, weighted by their share of value added. The data are usually seasonally adjusted and corrected for working days, with the month-on-month (MoM) and year-on-year (YoY) changes published.
Market implicationsIt is a thermometer of real activity and of Argentina's economic cycle, in an economy marked by high inflation and volatility. A sustained fall points to recession and pressures industrial employment, while a recovery signals a pick-up in demand.
LimitationsIt is subject to revisions and highly volatile, sensitive to one-off factors (labour disputes, input shortages, import restrictions) and to strong seasonality. Amid an unstable macroeconomic backdrop, it is best read as a trend rather than in isolation.
