About this indicator

Source
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
Frequency
Quarterly
Release
About 8-9 weeks after the reference quarter ends (ABS calendar)
What it is
Construction Work Done measures the value of construction actually carried out in Australia during the quarter (residential, non-residential and engineering), in volume terms and seasonally adjusted. Published by the ABS, it differs from Building Approvals, which count future authorisations rather than work performed.
How it's calculated
A quarterly survey of construction firms (the Construction Activity Survey) on the value of work carried out in the period, combining building (residential and non-residential) and engineering, in chain volume terms.
Market implications
It is a direct component of GDP fixed capital formation and a more reliable read on real sector activity than approvals; a strong figure points to a larger contribution from construction to Australian growth.
Limitations
It is released with a longer lag than other indicators (nearly two months after quarter-end) and is subject to revision as ongoing projects are reclassified.
