What it is	It tracks the change in wholesale selling prices (excluding VAT) of goods in Austria, gathered through a monthly survey of wholesalers. It is published by Statistik Austria and is a leading indicator of inflationary pressure before it reaches the final consumer.
How it's calculated	Statistik Austria collects around 3,100 wholesale selling prices (excluding VAT) each month, from a basket of about 395 goods reported by some 550 firms, weighted by the structure of Austrian wholesale trade. The base is 2025=100 from January 2026 (previously 2020=100; the level in this series is chained across both bases to preserve historical continuity). It is released as a year-on-year (YoY) and month-on-month (MoM) change.
Market implications	Rises in wholesale prices tend to pass through with a lag to consumer prices (CPI), so the series is watched as an early signal of goods inflation in Austria and, by extension, of price pressures in the euro area.
Limitations	It excludes services and can be volatile owing to energy and imported commodity prices. The base change in January 2026 introduces a minor methodological break in the historical level (the changes in this series are chained to avoid an artificial jump).
