FrequencyMensual
Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia (suele haber un dato preliminar y otro definitivo).
What it isMeasures the average change in the prices of the basket of goods and services consumed by resident households in Brazil, taken as the period average. It is the central gauge of consumer inflation, based on the IPCA compiled by IBGE.
How it's calculatedIt is built from a regular price survey across a wide sample of outlets and cities. Those prices, weighted by each item's share of the consumption basket, form an index with a base year (index 100); average inflation is the mean of the index's year-on-year change over the year.
Market implicationsPrice developments directly affect Brazilian households' consumption, saving and purchasing power, and provide the central reference for the Central Bank of Brazil, which sets the Selic rate under an explicit inflation target. A hotter-than-expected print tends to favour higher rates and the real.
LimitationsIt captures only the price change of the items in the basket, not of every good and service in the economy. To read the underlying trend, energy and unprocessed food are usually stripped out, which is known as core inflation.
