What it is
A confidence and expectations indicator for Danish manufacturing firms (industriens konjunkturbarometer), based on a monthly survey covering production, order books and stocks. It is compiled by Statistics Denmark within the EU's harmonised business survey programme.
How it's calculated
A monthly survey of Danish manufacturing firms on recent and expected production, order levels and stocks. It is published as a composite balance indicator (favourable minus unfavourable replies), usually seasonally adjusted.
Market implications
Readings above its historical average reflect business optimism and point to higher industrial output; readings below suggest a slowdown in manufacturing. It gives an early read on the Danish industrial cycle before the hard data are known.
Limitations
A qualitative survey (perceptions, not accounting figures); it may lead or lag the hard industrial production data and is sensitive to seasonal adjustment revisions.
