Release
Last week of the reference month (survey still running).
What it is
The Danish consumer confidence indicator (Forbrugerforventninger) measures households' expectations about their own and the country's economic situation, their plans for major purchases and their view on prices. It forms part of the EU's harmonised business and consumer survey programme (DG ECFIN).
How it's calculated
A monthly survey of a sample of Danish households run by the statistics office (Statistics Denmark). The headline indicator is the average of the net balances (positive minus negative replies) across several questions on household and national finances, saving and major purchases.
Market implications
Positive readings indicate consumer optimism and point to stronger spending, while negative readings reflect caution or pessimism that tends to precede a slowdown in private consumption.
Limitations
Highly sensitive to one-off news (energy prices, interest rates) that may not translate into actual changes in spending. Like any sentiment survey, it is subject to sampling error.
