What it isThe Consumer Price Index is a measure of the evolution of prices paid by consumers obtained through the study of a basket of goods and services. It is calculated according to the rules laid down in the Maastricht Treaty, and worked from January 1999 to comply with the price stability in the Eurozone, main task of the ECB.
How it's calculatedIt is calculated from information from Eurostat itself, in collaboration with the National Institutes of Statistics. The index is based on a survey of prices of a particular group of goods and services of all member states.
Market implicationsIt is one of the best indicators of inflation. Therefore, it is used to establish certain clauses in contracts. It is also one of the pillars of the ECB's monetary policy, along with the M3.
LimitationsThe data Eurozone CPI was subsequently published the different countries that compose it. Therefore, the data is not a novelty at the time of its publication, since it is easily estimated with the above information.
