About this indicator

SourceEurostat - Quarterly National Accounts (Employment)
FrequencyQuarterly
What it isMeasures the change in the number of people employed in the euro area according to Eurostat's Quarterly National Accounts (domestic concept: employment within the economic territory), with data adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects. It is a broad measure of employment, distinct from the unemployment rate.
How it's calculatedEurostat aggregates the employment data from the Quarterly National Accounts submitted by the national statistical institutes. Quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and year-on-year (YoY) rates of change in the number of people employed are published, adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects.
Market implicationsA key gauge of the economic cycle and the labour market: sustained employment growth tends to go hand in hand with expansion and higher disposable income, while a slowdown foreshadows weakness. The ECB watches it as a signal of wage and inflationary pressure for its monetary policy.
LimitationsAs an aggregate of the euro area economies, compiled by different national institutes, it is subject to significant revisions as countries update their figures. It does not break down by sector or type of contract (full or part time) and is released with a considerable lag.
