About this indicator

Statistics Finland
Frequency
Quarterly
Release
Roughly one to two months after the reference quarter closes (advance estimate and final figure).
What it is
Gross Domestic Product measures the value of all goods and services produced in Finland over a given period. Compiled by Statistics Finland (Tilastokeskus), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Finnish economy.
How it's calculated
Statistics Finland estimates GDP in volume terms (constant prices) and seasonally adjusted, aggregating the value added of all sectors. It is published as a quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year change, with a monthly trend indicator giving an early read.
Market implications
It is the main benchmark for the Finnish cycle and, as a euro-area member, feeds into the ECB's assessment of the regional backdrop. Weak growth points to softer employment and tax revenue and reinforces the case for accommodative monetary policy.
Limitations
It is released with a lag of several weeks and the first estimates are revised in later publications, so the initial figure is not final. In a small, open economy, individual sectors such as forestry or technology can swing the headline.
