About this indicator

What it is	It reflects the level of output of the economy in a given period. Tries to cover all branches of industry including Industry, Energy, and in the case of Germany also includes the construction. Also it differs between goods industries Capital and Consumer Goods, Durable and Non-Durable.
How it's calculated	The figures making up the index are obtained from surveys on production levels of different companies in the industrial sector, coming to represent 80% of German industry. The figures are seasonally adjusted and are expressed in terms of volume.
Market implications	Despite the importance acquired by the services sector, the secondary sector or Industrial remains the central pillar of any national economy. Industrial Production is considered as a whole as a significant indicator of the state of the economic cycle, it remains high in times of prosperity and the contrast in economic downturns or cooling.
Limitations	Like most indexes, it is provisional and data are revised with the publication of the data in the next period. For data obtained using surveys are subject to estimation error and variability associated bearing such indicators.
