About this indicator

SourceHellenic Statistical Authority
FrequencyMensual
Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia (suele haber un dato preliminar y otro definitivo).
What it isMeasures the change in the prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Greek households, compiled by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) under the EU's harmonised methodology (HICP). Its common Eurostat rules make Greek inflation comparable with the rest of the euro area.
How it's calculatedBuilt from a regular survey of prices at outlets across the country, with each item weighted by household spending under the harmonised COICOP classification. It is published as an index against a base year, with the year-on-year (YoY) and month-on-month (MoM) rates the headline figures.
Market implicationsAs a euro-area member, Greek inflation feeds the aggregate HICP that guides European Central Bank policy. A high reading adds upward pressure on rate expectations and the euro, while a low one strengthens bets on looser policy.
LimitationsBeing harmonised, it does not capture every feature of national consumption and can diverge from the traditional Greek CPI. To assess the underlying trend, analysts watch core inflation, which excludes the more volatile energy and unprocessed food.
