About this indicator

SourceEuropean Central Bank (ECB Balance of Payments); original data from National Bank of Hungary (MNB)
FrequencyQuarterly
Release Aproximadamente 70-90 dias despues del fin del trimestre de referencia.
What it isMeasures the current account balance of Hungary's balance of payments (goods, services, primary and secondary income) versus the rest of the world. It sums up whether the country lends abroad or needs external funding.
How it's calculatedThe central bank (MNB) compiles the balance of payments under the IMF's BPM6 methodology; the ECB re-publishes the series through its own balance of payments dataflow for EU member states. Expressed in millions of euros.
Market implicationsA sustained surplus indicates the country saves more than it invests and finances the rest of the world, while a persistent deficit can signal external vulnerability and pressure on the forint, which the MNB watches closely.
LimitationsIt is re-published through the ECB (an aggregator) rather than direct from the MNB, and may differ from the headline figure the MNB highlights in its own releases owing to a different definition of the external balance. It is also revised as fuller data arrive.
