What it isCaptures the value of Indonesia's goods exports. As a major commodity exporter (coal, palm oil, nickel), the figure swings heavily with international prices for those raw materials.
How it's calculatedPublished by the statistics office BPS from customs declarations lodged with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise: FOB value in millions of US dollars. Released monthly on a provisional basis, with a year-on-year change.
Market implicationsStrong exports support the rupiah, build up reserves and feed the trade surplus that Bank Indonesia monitors. Markets follow this figure closely given the heavy commodity weighting of Indonesia's overseas sales.
LimitationsProvisional figures, revised as fuller customs returns come in. The value is highly sensitive to commodity prices and one-off bulk shipments, producing monthly volatility.
