What it isIndonesia's official reserve assets are the central bank's liquid external assets (foreign currency, gold, SDRs and the IMF position). Bank Indonesia uses them to support the rupiah and cover imports and external debt service, and reports how many months of imports they cover.
How it's calculatedCompiled by Bank Indonesia following IMF methodology and published monthly in billions of US dollars in the Official Reserve Assets release, at end-of-month value.
Market implicationsThey are the gauge of Indonesia's external buffer. A sustained fall is read as pressure on the rupiah or as central bank intervention to defend it, and it feeds into the country's risk premium and Bank Indonesia's rate decisions.
LimitationsIt is an end-of-month figure and not seasonally adjusted. It also captures the effect of gold valuation and cross exchange rates, not just the central bank's purchases and sales, so monthly changes may not reflect real flows.
