Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia (suele haber un dato preliminar y otro definitivo).
What it isIreland's Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) measures the change in the prices of goods and services bought by households. It is compiled by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) using Eurostat's common methodology, enabling comparison across the EU and the calculation of euro-area inflation.
How it's calculatedIt is built on a consumption basket weighted by household spending, following Eurostat's harmonised classifications (COICOP) with a common base year. It is reported as year-on-year and month-on-month changes (%) and differs from the national CPI in items such as owner-occupied housing.
Market implicationsAs a euro-area member, Ireland's HICP feeds the aggregate the European Central Bank (ECB) watches for its price-stability target. A hotter-than-expected print supports expectations of higher rates and a firmer euro, though the euro-area aggregate matters more than the Irish figure alone.
LimitationsBeing harmonised, it does not reflect every feature of Irish consumption, notably the exclusion of owner-occupied housing, so it can diverge from the national CPI. For the underlying trend, the core HICP excluding energy and unprocessed food is followed.
