What it is	Business confidence is a sentiment index measuring how Dutch firms assess the current economic situation and their expectations for the coming months. It is compiled by the statistics office CBS and is a leading indicator of the business cycle.
How it's calculated	It is drawn from a survey of company managers across sectors (manufacturing, construction, trade and services), with questions on the state of business, order books, stocks and expectations. The index summarises the balance between favourable and unfavourable replies.
Market implications	Business confidence is closely linked to output and investment and, being released ahead of official data, helps anticipate the path of Dutch GDP. A sustained improvement points to stronger activity, while a deterioration signals a slowdown.
Limitations	Being based on sentiment surveys, it is subject to sampling error and to factors unrelated to real activity; it reflects perceptions that do not always translate into output or investment.
