Statistics New Zealand (Stats NZ)
Frequency
Quarterly
Release
Around the middle of the third month after the quarter closes (10:45 NZ time).
What it is
Gross domestic product measures the value of all goods and services produced in New Zealand. Published quarterly by Stats NZ in volume terms (constant prices, seasonally adjusted), it reports the quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year change.
How it's calculated
Stats NZ estimates GDP using the production approach (the sum of industries' value added) in chain-volume, seasonally adjusted terms, and publishes both the quarterly and annual changes.
Market implications
GDP growth is the broadest gauge of New Zealand's economic health: a stronger-than-expected print supports the New Zealand dollar and a more hawkish RBNZ, while a contraction opens the door to rate cuts.
Limitations
It is released with a lag (around three months after the quarter ends) and is subject to revision; the production, expenditure and income estimates can differ from one another.
