Release
About 6-7 weeks after the quarter ends, within the 'Business financial data' release (10:45 NZ time)
What it is
Manufacturing sales (the Economic Survey of Manufacturing) measure sales revenue of New Zealand's manufacturing sector across all industries (dairy, meat, wood, metal, chemicals, textiles and more). Stats NZ publishes them in volume (deflated) and seasonally adjusted.
How it's calculated
Stats NZ surveys manufacturing firms each quarter on their sales (operating income), purchases and stocks, and publishes the 'All manufacturing' total, deflated and seasonally adjusted, with quarterly and year-on-year changes.
Market implications
A rise in manufacturing sales volume signals strength in industry and in both domestic and export demand; a fall points to a weakening manufacturing cycle. It feeds the quarterly GDP estimate and is therefore watched ahead of Reserve Bank (RBNZ) policy.
Limitations
It is a quarterly survey with frequent revisions; the 'All manufacturing' aggregate is heavily influenced by the dairy and meat sub-sectors, which are seasonal and dependent on international prices, adding volatility to the figure.
