Release
Roughly one to two months after the reference period.
What it is
The current account is the section of Poland's balance of payments that records its transactions with the rest of the world: trade in goods and services, primary income (from labour and capital) and secondary income (current transfers such as remittances and EU funds).
How it's calculated
Compiled by the central bank (NBP) under the IMF's BPM6 methodology, summing the goods, services, primary income and secondary income balances. A positive balance is a surplus and a negative one a deficit; it equals the economy's net lending or borrowing versus the rest of the world. Monthly series in millions of euros.
Market implications
A current account deficit must be funded by capital inflows or by running down reserves and worsens the net external position, whereas a surplus improves it. It is a benchmark for the zloty's external soundness and feeds into NBP decisions.
Limitations
The figures come with a lag of several weeks and are revised as fuller data arrive. The monthly balance is volatile and sensitive to one-off income flows and EU fund transfers.
