Release
First working days of the month after the reference period.
What it is
Poland's official reserve assets are the external assets (foreign currencies, monetary gold, SDRs and the IMF reserve position) held by the National Bank of Poland (NBP). They measure the country's capacity to underpin its currency and meet external obligations.
How it's calculated
It is the end-of-month value of foreign currencies, gold, SDRs and the IMF reserve position. The NBP publishes it monthly; the total is typically expressed in euros and dollars.
Market implications
High reserves convey external strength and give the NBP room to intervene in the zloty (PLN) market if needed. The NBP has also stepped up its gold holdings, which markets read as diversification and a support for confidence in the currency.
Limitations
The headline level is affected by market valuation (the price of gold and exchange rates), so monthly changes do not always reflect actual purchases or sales of reserves.
