About this indicator

Release Aproximadamente un mes después del periodo de referencia.
What it isRetail sales measure the volume of goods sold by Singapore's retail outlets. Published by the Singapore Department of Statistics (DOS), they are one of the most important gauges of household consumption.
How it's calculatedThe DOS builds an index against a base year from the turnover reported by a sample of retailers. It is released in volume terms (deflated) and, given the weight of cars, usually also excluding motor vehicles, as year-on-year and monthly changes.
Market implicationsIt gives an early read on private consumption, an important component of Singapore's GDP, making it an input for growth estimates and for gauging the health of domestic demand in a very open economy.
LimitationsIt is a volatile indicator, sensitive to seasonality (Lunar New Year) and to car sales, which can distort the total. Preliminary data are revised as more survey responses come in.
