What it is
The Swedish consumer confidence index (Konsumentbarometern), compiled by the NIER (Konjunkturinstitutet), the public economic research institute. It measures households' expectations about their own finances and those of the country.
How it's calculated
A monthly survey of Swedish households on their current financial situation and expectations (jobs, saving, major purchases). The index is normalised to a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 10 since 1996, and is part of the EU's harmonised survey programme (DG ECFIN).
Market implications
Readings above 100 indicate optimism relative to the historical average; below, pessimism. It anticipates household consumption and, alongside the business barometer, shapes expectations for Riksbank policy and the Swedish krona.
Limitations
Subject to minor revisions and to perception shocks (news, energy prices, mortgage rates) that do not always translate into actual spending. It is a qualitative sentiment gauge, not a measure of realised consumption.
