About this indicator

Source
Statistics Sweden
Frequency
Quarterly
Release
About 85-90 days after the reference quarter ends.
What it is
The current account of Sweden's balance of payments records goods and services trade, primary income (labour and capital income) and secondary income (transfers) against the rest of the world, in billions of Swedish kronor (SEK). It is compiled by Statistics Sweden (SCB).
How it's calculated
It is built from surveys of financial and non-financial companies and from customs records, following the IMF's BPM6 methodology. It is released in quarterly levels, in billions of kronor.
Market implications
A sustained surplus shows that Sweden saves more than it invests and is a net creditor abroad, which tends to support the krona; a deficit would signal the opposite and greater reliance on external funding. It is a reference for the external soundness of a small, very open economy.
Limitations
It is subject to significant revisions in later releases, and the quarterly figures are not seasonally adjusted, so it is better to compare with the same quarter a year earlier rather than the preceding quarter.
