What it isThailand's customs-basis trade balance measures the difference between exports and imports of goods in a month, based on Thai customs clearances. It is published by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) in its monthly foreign trade report.
How it's calculatedBalance = exports minus imports for the month (customs clearance values, trade with the world), expressed in billions of US dollars. The MOC releases the data around the 24th-25th of the following month. A positive figure is a surplus; a negative one, a deficit.
Market implicationsThailand is a very open, export-driven economy (electronics, autos, agri-food): its trade balance moves the baht. A deterioration usually reflects higher energy or gold imports, or weaker external demand, and weighs on the baht; a surplus supports it.
LimitationsIt is a goods series on a customs basis (including gold and special transactions), distinct from the balance-of-payments basis published by the Bank of Thailand (BoT), which applies adjustments and may differ. The MOC revises earlier months in later releases.
