What it is
Ukraine's Industrial Production Index measures the level of output in industry, covering manufacturing, mining and energy supply. Published by the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (Ukrstat), it is one of the most closely watched cyclical indicators because it anticipates the economic cycle.
How it's calculated
It is built by aggregating the sub-indices of the various industrial branches, weighted by their share of value added, on a base year (index 100). The data are usually adjusted for calendar effects and reported as year-on-year and month-on-month changes (%).
Market implications
It is tied to the economic cycle and GDP. In the current war-affected context it is a key gauge of the country's productive resilience, the impact of damage to energy infrastructure and export capacity, with a bearing on National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) policy.
Limitations
It is subject to revision and is highly volatile. The war introduces severe distortions: incomplete coverage of affected areas, power cuts and anomalous comparison bases, so year-on-year changes should be interpreted with particular caution.
