About this indicator

SourceU.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Department of Energy
FrequencyWeekly
Release Jueves siguiente a la semana de referencia (se retrasa si hay festivo federal), 10:30 GMT-4/5 (hora del Este). Semana de referencia termina en viernes.
What it isMeasures the weekly change in natural gas held in underground storage (working gas) across the Lower 48 US states, published in the EIA's Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report. It is the single most market-moving release for the natural gas (Henry Hub) market.
How it's calculatedThe EIA collects weekly data from storage operators via the mandatory EIA-912 form. The level is measured in billions of cubic feet (Bcf) as of Friday's close, and the weekly change is the simple difference from the prior week.
Market implicationsA smaller-than-expected injection in spring and summer, or a larger-than-expected withdrawal in winter, is typically bullish for gas as it signals a tighter market; the reverse is bearish. It moves energy equities and, indirectly, exporter currencies such as the CAD and NOK.
LimitationsStrong seasonality (injections in summer, withdrawals in winter) makes absolute levels hard to compare across the year; the market judges the weekly change against consensus and the five-year average. Subject to minor revisions and heavily driven by weather.
