What it is	Japan's Current Account is the component of the balance of payments recording transactions in goods and services, primary income (income from labour and capital) and secondary income (current transfers) between Japanese residents and the rest of the world. It is published by the Ministry of Finance together with the Bank of Japan.
How it's calculated	It is the sum of four sub-balances: the goods trade balance, services, primary income and secondary income. A positive balance means a current account surplus and a negative one a deficit; it is expressed in billions of yen and published in both original and seasonally adjusted form.
Market implications	Japan is a traditional net creditor thanks to its overseas income, so the current account can be read as its net investment position against the rest of the world. A persistent deterioration weighs on the country's external wealth and on the yen, whereas a wide surplus underpins it; markets pay particular attention to the goods trade balance.
Limitations	The figures are released with a lag of almost two months and are subject to revision. The balance is also highly sensitive to energy and imported commodity prices and to the exchange rate, factors that can distort any single month's reading.
