What it isThe section of the UK's balance of payments covering cross-border trade in goods and services, primary income (labour and investment income) and current transfers without a quid pro quo. It is published quarterly by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
How it's calculatedIt is the sum of the goods, services, primary income and current transfers balances. A positive figure is a surplus, a negative one a deficit. The ONS publishes it each quarter, in pounds and also as a share of GDP.
Market implicationsThe UK runs a structural current-account deficit that relies on external financing (the 'kindness of strangers'). A sharp deterioration can pressure sterling, especially if it coincides with capital outflows or waning appetite for UK assets.
LimitationsThe figures come out with a lag of several months and are subject to substantial revisions; the quarterly balance is volatile and sensitive to investment income and one-off trade items.
